LAB 04 · OPEN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Build the next layer.
Share the work in public.

Open R&D connects researchers, engineers, manufacturers, builders and curious people around practical systems we can define, measure and improve together.

This page invites collaboration; it is not funding, engineering approval or a performance guarantee. High-voltage, pressurized, structural and public-facing work requires qualified review, appropriate protection and a documented stop procedure.

THE OPEN R&D MODEL

Ideas become infrastructure through shared proof.

Open work makes the question, baseline, prototype, data, failure and next decision visible. The goal is not to sound certain; it is to make useful certainty possible for the next person.

Sustainable Oasis open research and development lab with energy, water, food and workshop systems

A shared research track has a clear boundary.

  • 01State the question, hypothesis and decision the result should support.
  • 02Set a baseline, control, safe operating envelope and manual override.
  • 03Build the smallest useful prototype with a defined stop condition.
  • 04Measure inputs, outputs, recovered energy, water, materials, time and cost.
  • 05Publish raw observations, uncertainty, failures, maintenance and limitations.
  • 06Choose the next step: replicate, redesign, transfer to a prototype or stop.

There are no “free energy” claims here. Energy balances, water quality, materials, safety controls and human decisions remain visible so that a promising idea can be improved without overstating what it proves.

OPEN R&D TRACKS

Six tracks. One method.

Each track is a place to bring a practical question, a capability or a test site. The stage labels describe the work in progress, never a product rating or a promise of performance.

SO-EMS · TRACK 01

Energy management

Make generation, storage, recovery and useful load visible through the SO-EMS measurement architecture.

Active architecture
Partners: measurement, controls, low-voltage buildersNext: define the repeatable meter bench
SO-WATER · TRACK 02

Water–Energy Loop

Test circulation, filtration, recovery and maintenance as one accountable loop rather than isolated components.

Open scoping
Partners: water, pump, filtration and field operatorsNext: set flow, quality and service boundaries
SO-FOOD · TRACK 03

Growing and aquaponics

Connect water, light, nutrients, yield and labour so compact food systems can be improved and replicated.

Open scoping
Partners: growers, educators and food-system designersNext: choose a small, observable crop loop
SO-AUTOMATION · TRACK 04

Sensing and control

Design dashboards and automations that help people make better decisions while preserving a clear manual override.

Open scoping
Partners: firmware, data, interface and safety specialistsNext: map sensors to decisions and failure states
SO-REUSE · TRACK 05

Materials and workshop

Turn recovered materials into safe, useful parts by documenting preparation, quality, labour and end-of-life limits.

Open scoping
Partners: fabricators, repairers and material stewardsNext: select one traceable material stream
SO-RESILIENCE · TRACK 06

Backup and off-grid systems

Keep critical loads clear, safe and serviceable through solar, storage, handoff procedures and honest runtime data.

Open scoping
Partners: electricians, installers and community sitesNext: define a small critical-load scenario

An open track can start with a conversation, but it becomes research only when its boundary, method, evidence language and safety responsibilities are written down.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Bring a question, a capability or a test site.

Open R&D works when the right people can see what is needed and what is being asked of them. Contributions can be technical, practical, educational, local or financial, with boundaries agreed before work begins.

01 · Research

Measurement and analysis

Help shape questions, baselines, instruments, calculations, uncertainty and reproducible records.

02 · Engineering

Safety and control design

Review operating envelopes, interlocks, fault states, manual overrides and maintainable architecture.

03 · Manufacturing

Specs and samples

Share component data, test samples, service limits and the practical constraints of making something well.

04 · Building

Fabrication and field work

Bring tools, materials, installation experience and honest feedback from real sites and real conditions.

05 · Education

Explanation and replication

Turn a method into a guide, workshop or lesson that more people can understand and safely repeat.

06 · Community

Needs and context

Define the local problem, operating reality, access needs and outcomes that make a system genuinely useful.

QuestionWhat practical uncertainty matters?
ContributionWhat can you bring or measure?
Site and accessWhere can the work happen?
Safety boundaryWhat must be reviewed first?

R&D RULES

Open does not mean uncontrolled.

Shared work needs shared language. These commitments protect people, partners and future readers while keeping the route from a result to a responsible product clear.

Boundary

Safe operating envelope

Every test names what is in scope, what is out of scope and who must review higher-risk work.

Evidence

Four honest labels

Demonstrated, estimated, measured and derived statements stay distinct in every public record.

Safety

Stop conditions

Isolation, PPE, thermal limits, pressure limits, manual override and emergency steps come before optimization.

Ownership

Clear contribution terms

Attribution, data access, partner terms and publication boundaries are agreed before a collaboration begins.

JOIN OPEN R&D

Ready to work on a useful question?

Tell us what you want to understand, what you can contribute and what kind of site, data or partnership would make the work possible. We will reply with a bounded next step.

  • 01Choose a track or describe a new question that belongs in the Lab.
  • 02Define your contribution, time, site, tools or data access.
  • 03Agree on evidence, safety, attribution and the next decision.

We will reply with next steps. This form does not grant access to confidential work, approve a build or collect payment.

FROM OPEN WORK TO DEPLOYMENT

Prove the layer before you scale it.

Move from a shared question to an experiment, a prototype, a documented result and—only when the evidence supports it—a useful kit or system.
