Automation should not create unsafe conditions when a sensor, network, controller or software service fails. Critical systems should be designed with appropriate limits, physical safeguards and manual override.
Internet-connected devices also introduce privacy and cybersecurity considerations. Access controls, software updates, network segmentation and careful exposure of remote-control functions should be considered as systems become more connected.
